Who Does What to Whom? Responding safely to so called 'bi-directional' abuse.

Course Overview

Who Does What to Whom? Working Safely with Conflict and Violence in Relationships
Violence and abuse reported by both parties in a relationship can raise challenging questions for practitioners. Too often, the narrative defaults to “they’re both victims and both perpetrators” – but the reality is rarely that simple.

This one-day course is designed to deepen understanding of so-called bi-directional abuse, equipping professionals to respond safely and confidently in complex cases. Rooted in learning from Domestic Abuse Related Death Reviews (DARDRs) and informed by best practice from across the UK and internationally, the course brings a critical, practice-based lens to assessment and intervention.

Through a mix of theory, case reflection, and structured tools, participants will explore:

  • The dynamics of power, control, and resistance in intimate partner violence

  • The distinction between reactive violence and coercive harm

  • Approaches to identifying primary perpetrators and victims when both parties disclose abuse

  • How to challenge assumptions and narratives that can obscure risk and harm

This course is suitable for anyone working with individuals or families affected by domestic abuse, including social workers, family intervention teams, substance use practitioners, and frontline domestic abuse services.
